The Indian Railways System is the world's fourth largest with a
route length of over 60,000 Kms. Everyday, more than 70000 trains
carry more than 11 million passangers and connect more than 7000
stations.
ADVANCE RESRVATION
One can make reservation 60 days in advance excluding the date
of journey at the date of journey at the train originating station.
In case of some Intercity day express trains, the reservation period
is less. As there is always a great rush on major routes so it is
always advisable to book your tickets in advance. There are special
facilities provided by Indian Railways to foreign tourists. Most
of important trains have a special quota for foreign tourists subject
to payment in US Dollars or Pound , Sterling. For making a reservation,
complete name, sex and age are required.
BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
There is ample free baggage allowance by Indian Railways which
varies from 35 kilograms per person to 70 kilograms per person depending
on class of travel.
PASSENGER AMENITIES
Most of important trains have pantry car facilities. Catering
is also arranged in trains where there are no pantry cars.
Bedrolls are supplied free of cost to all passengers traveling in
AC first class, Ac Two Tier and Ac Three Tier. Passengers traveling
in First class can avail this by paying nominal charges of Rs.20/-
per bedroll.
There are Cloak rooms and safety lockers available at major stations
where you can keep your luggage in safe custody. Only locked luggage
is accepted in cloakrooms. Porters are available at all major stations
to help carry your heavy luggage.

There are following classes of accommodation in India Railways.
To give you an idea this is the fare for 1000kms. For following
classes in Express and ordinary trains. The fare in Shatabdi and
Rajdhani Trains is higher.

REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS
If you are holding confirmed ticket and need to cancel for any
reason then if you cancel it more than one day in advance of the
scheduled departure of train, excluding date of journey, the minimum
cancellation rule will apply which is as follows.

For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than one day in advance
and up to 4 hours before schedule departure of train, the cancellation
charges are 20% of the Fare.
For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than four hours before
schedule departure of the train and upto 3 hrs. (up to 200 kms),
6 hrs. (201-500 kms) & 12 hours for more than 500 kms., the cancellation
charges are 50% of the fare.
For cancellation of waitlisted tickets only Rs. 10/- will be deducted
per passenger. In most cases of tickets are surrendered within the
prescribed time limits, you can get refund across the counter.
KIND OF TRAINS
Indian Railways has introduce superfast trains ( although not
as fast you have in Europre, USA or many other parts of the world)
for travelling such such as Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express
trains. Besides these, there are many other Express and local trains.
The fare applicable for Shatabdi and Rajdhani is much more than
other trains.
SHATABADI EXPRESS
Indian Railways plysome superfast, intercity trains known as
Shatabdi Express which link major cities and offer facilities for
quick and comfortable travel. It is fully air-conditioned and has
only two classes of travel AC Chair car and Executive Chair car
and no sleeper classes as it travels only during the day. You get
complimentary meals and snacks before you reach your destination.

RAJDHANI EXPRESS
The Rajdhani Express, India's superfast, fully air-conditioned train
gives you the opportunity of experiencing Indian Railways at its
best. Meal and snacks are provided during the journey. Rajdhani
trains comprise of AC First Class, Ac II Tier and Ac III Tier sleepers.
The train links New Delhi to India's major cities such as Mumbai,
Kolkata, Chennai, Bhubneshwar, Bangalore, Jammu, Hydrabad and Thiruvanthpuram
besides plying between other major cities.

INDRAIL PASS
To provide easy and comfortable journey to foreign tourists, Indian
Railways have introduced the facility of Indrail Passes which allow
all budget visitors to travel as they like grom any point to any
point without route restrictions. Indiarail Passes are available
for foreign nationals and Indians residing abroad holding a valid
passport against payment in US Dollars or any other convertible
foreign currencies. Although with Indiarail pass, one can travel
whenever and wherever one likes within validity period, it does
not guarantee reserved accommodation, although assistance is given
from a Foreign Tourist Quota for last minute plans. A holder of
Indiarail pass is not required to pay any reservation or any other
charges.
