International Air Travel
Just about all major international airlines fly into India. According
to the classification of Airports Authority of India, India has
6 major international airports - Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata
(Calcutta), Chennai (Madras), Tiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and
the newly upgraded Bangalore airport. These airports cater to around
85% of international air traffic in India. All the international
airports have the requisite facilities like lounges, restrooms,
transit accommodation, banks, telecommunication centers, business
centers with word processors and telefax, post office, tourist information
centers, hotel information, train information, car hire, restaurants,
and other services. The airports also offer dutyfree shopping, snack
bars, nursery, baby-care rooms, and an art gallery for art lovers.
Dutyfree prices in the airport shops are competitive.
New Delhi
The Indira Gandhi International Airport is situated around 20 km
from the city center. The normal time taken to reach the airport
from the city center is around 20-25 minutes. Buses, taxis, and
auto-rickshaws are available to cater to the tourists.

Mumbai (Bombay)
The Sahar International Airport is situated around 30 km from the
city airport. This airport handles the maximum number of international
flights to and from India. It takes around 1 to 2 hours to reach
the airport from the city center. Prepaid taxis are available to
different parts of the city. From midnight to 5 am, the taxis charge
an extra surcharge of 30%.

Chennai (Madras)
The Aringar Anna International Airport is situated at Trisoolam
in Meenambakkam, 12 km from the city center. It takes around 30
minutes to cover the distance between the city center and the airport.
The prepaid taxis charge Rs. 200 from the airport to the city center.
Coaches are also available for Rs. 60 from the star hotels to the
airport. Auto-rickshaws charge Rs. 120 to cover the same distance.

Kolkata (Calcutta)
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is located at
Dum Dum, about 20 km from the city center. It takes around 30-60
minutes to cover this distance, depending on the traffic situation.
A trip to the city center costs around Rs. 200 by prepaid taxis.
General and air-conditioned cars are also available on hire. The
city coach service costs around Rs. 100.

Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrium)
The airport is around 6 km from the city center and 15 km from
the Kovalam Beach. Prepaid taxi from the airport cost Rs. 90 to
the city and Rs. 190-225 to Kovalam. There are flights to West Asia,
Sri Lanka, and Maldives, with connecting flights to other parts
of the world.
